Instructor Profile

Malcolm Murphy

I started my Tai Chi journey back in 2002 when I joined the Practical Tai Chi Chaun International classes in Glasgow. At the time of walking through the door I had no idea of how welcoming and generous the people I would meet would be. Over many years we trained, competed, travelled and laughed. They are my Tai Chi family and I am a better person because of that.

Charles Gorrie will always be my Sifu and his knowledge, generosity and spirit is given without question and at no additional cost. Our Grandmaster was Dan Docherty (sadly now deceased) who is credited with reinvigorating Tai Chi Chuan in the UK. I went through Bai Shi with Dan in 2005. His legacy remains through his books and his students across the world. I also had the pleasure of training with Dave Baker in Oxford for just over a year, an education in martial efficiency.

I have competed and judged in the British Open and also judged in the European Championship. My knowledge and experience has meant that I have trained and trained with many students in my own family and taken part in camps with many other Tai Chi  practitioners from different styles.

At Practical Tai Chi Suffolk I teach:

  • Hand Form - Short
  • Hand Form - Long
  • Martial Applications
  • Pushing Hands
  • Spear Form
  • Sabre Form

My approach is always to meet the individual needs of each student. Tai Chi has taught me there are many ways to enjoy the art!

Meditation

Finding your own way (Tao)

It can be difficult to find the right meditation style as different people want different things from their practice. Many are convinced that their way is the right way. However, meditation like life isn't that simple. Ironically it can be life that gets in the way of being able to meditate.

Having experienced a number of different approaches and wrestled with trying to fit them into and around a busy work and life schedule, I know how difficult it can be to keep up your practice. In the end I mixed and matched what suited me. Eventually, ending up helping people to do the same.

You don't need a Guru or perfect serenity to benefit from meditation. In my experience what people need is a guide to help them discover what works for them.

In the end I landed somewhere between the Zen Buddhist tradition and the Taoist approach. Sometimes using meditation to reflect on a personal dilemma and at other times visualising a relaxing walk through nature.

Ultimately in these modern times, for most of us, it is about working out how we fit whatever works for us into our already busy lives. If you would like some help  I would be happy to share what I know has been  successful for me and others.
